8BitDo answered the call for Steam Input and went beyond expectations.
I have waited a long time since the Horipad Steam Controller for any manufacturer to step up to the plate and add Steam Input as an option on a controller that has great build quality for 70$ it lacked Gyro Support, Rumble, it also did not have a good USB-C to USB-A controller that would disconnect at points but I still thought something like this needed to exist on the market and there was potential for someone else to do it correctly. 8BitDo has answered my call and went beyond expectations. I will go into the main points of why anyone should get it and also what they can improve for the future.1.Steam Input, which is the main selling point it is extremely helpful. I can remap the extra buttons on the back and on the shoulder buttons. Absolutely easy with D-Input enabled in the back of the controller. Also Steam will go into Big Picture Mode if you hold the Pixel Heart on the lower right when in D-Input mode. Both of these features do work on Windows.2.The ability to easily move around the Face Buttons easily with a puller without needing to buy another controller for the Xbox Face Buttons or to switch it back to Nintendo. Face Buttons are magnetic, and they are strong. You would need to throw a controller against the wall or really use your nails to open them. This went beyond my expectations.3. Can move from Xbox(S-X), D-Input(D) and Switch(S) very easily by sliding the toggle left or right and it is very straightforward and easy to understand when looking behind the controller including if you are in BT mode or 2.4GHZ if you are not on a Wired connection.4. TMR Joysticks do feel really premium and the Precision is on point when moving the Joystick around which is a natural evolution of the Hall Effect Joystick.5. Rumble feels like Full HD Rumble and not just HD Rumble6. D-Pad has such an excellent Tactile feeling more so than the Pro 2, and I like the tiny satisfying click noise it makes when I move the D-Pad.7. The Gyro Support is great and it works much better than the Pro 2 even though that was perfect already. I tried it on my Switch for Mario Odyssey and found no issues.Improvements for the future.1. Add a 8.5-10 ft USB-C to USB-A cable Braided Cable in the box. I understand the Pro 3 has so many features and has better build quality that they most likely had to cut costs somewhere, but it would have been nice to have this. Maybe this can be in the next generation of the Pro Controller Lineup.2. Add Steam Input to Wireless 2.4GHZ as well. Currently it only supports Bluetooth and Wired. A firmware update would help alleviate this for 8BitDo Controllers especially 8BitDo Pro 3 owners.3. Face Buttons would be a good idea to sell for this controller if anyone loses the default ones that came with the controller or wishes to customize their Face Buttons. If there was even potentially a way to get Sony Inspired Icons or even the SNES Inspired would be cool.4. I would like to also politely ask for Linux Support as it seems to only fully support Windows and SteamOS.Other than that. I do think this is a great controller and well worth the price. The pro’s outweighs most cons given as a whole. I still give it a 5* because it is hard to find fault with this controller and anything else can easily be supported or fixed in the future.

5 Stars another hit for 8BitDo!
Been gaming since Atari 2600, so for a little over 40 years: I have every pro controller, elite controller etc etc. Let’s get down to the brass tax and compare it to my other controllers.Compared to the Dual Sense Edge; the 8BitDo Pro 3 is much lighter, just as responsive but a little smaller. Ergonomically it feels almost as comfortable. It might be the length or the angle of the dual sense that makes it slightly more comfortable in the hands.Compared to the Switch Pro Controller; the 8BitDo Pro 3 feels about the same weight, also feels more responsive than the pro controller. In terms of comfort they feel the same.Compared to my Xbox Elite 1 and 2 controllers; the 8BitDo Pro 3 feels way lighter, more comfortable and just as responsive. Definitely feels a lot smaller than the Elite controllers. I have big hands so if you never used this controller before, it will feel small compared to your Xbox and PlayStation controllers.Compared to the previous model the 8BitDo Pro 2; the Pro 3 feels a little heavier. Everything else feels the same.Things I really like about it; it’s feels more premium than the previous model. The interchangeable magnetic buttons and “fun sticks” are super cool and a nice addition. The charging dock and USB dongle are really nice. Feels like it could take a beating as well, I have over a hundred rigorous hours on the previous model and it still runs like new. Love the addition of the new hot buttons as well.Things I don’t like. No wake up, and unlike the previous model, this version doesn’t have battery swap. Although I hate using batteries I use rechargeable batteries. Connected to my Ally X running Bazzite OS, and had to update the driver and reboot the system. At first I thought there was something wrong with the controller as the right thumb stick was unresponsive in certain directions in certain games emulated: After a reboot and update worked perfectly fine on Steam OS. Lastly this controller is loud, it seems louder than the previous model when smashing buttons in Street Fighter and other games. It’s super clicky, which definitely gives me a nostalgic feeling but also can be annoying at times. As of right now it’s a toss up between this controller and the Dual Sense Edge, I like the ergonomics of the Edge better but I like the weight of the 8BitDo Pro 3. It could even be slightly heavier and I wouldn’t complain about it either. However if you are comparing value to price point, the 8BitDo Pro 3 wins hands down compared to every other controller I have. If you have to choose between a Switch Pro Controller and this, I would pick this every time even without the wake capability. As for connectivity, it connects super easy in windows, Steam OS, Switch etc. The dongle is better as far as latency for connectivity on the switch. All in all for the price point, yes this is good. $20 bucks more than the previous model but I get it with the addition of the dock and magnetic buttons etc: I love playing Mario Kart 8 on my Ally X using the “fun sticks”: Definitely does feel arcade and feels fun for me: Your mileage may very.Only issue I had was I preordered for day 1 release, and initially day 1 was around 10 days before I actually got the controller. Not a big deal but what was the point of the preorder… Still I would buy again and likely will purchase another for my son.

    Great for Steam/SteamOS
I bought the controller specifically to use for Steam Input and it does not disappoint. Full customization in Steam/SteamOS.Some glaring problems for me…1. The face buttons are loud, annoyingly. I considered returning the controller just because of this but after considering the many good points of the controller, I decided to just mod it and it is quieter now. I do still wish it wasn’t this loud to begin with. Opening it was not easy though.2. The controller does not work with the 2.4 GHz dongle that it comes with in direct input mode or Steam Input mode. You have to use Bluetooth for that. And since I bought this specifically to use for Steam Input, gyro is important for me. Bluetooth just doesn’t cut it. It’s unstable, jittery and sometimes the gyro just sort of flies off on its own. Using it wired solves this entirely though but I would prefer to play with it wirelessly.3. This one is minor but it was a problem for me until I found how to “fix” it – the ABXY buttons are using the Nintendo layout, not Xbox, the controller by default even in D-input mode uses the Switch layout for the face buttons. I am aware you can swap the physical buttons but I am talking about the software side of things.Things that I like:1. The analog sticks are smooth and – in my experience, precise.2. Gyroscope feels accurate to me, I am used to the Steam Decks gyro and Dualsense Edge and I think they feel similar.3. D-pad, this is the best D-pad I have used on a controller so far. I only wish the facebuttons were this quiet too.4. Build quality is also great considering the price. Has some decent weight to it as well. Not too heavy or too light.

Quality is great for the price you are paying, everything is good, from the button mapping app to the charging dock. The interchangeable buttons are a bit too noisy, they feel loose but I think it was just manufactured that way
